π Festivals Not to Be Missed on Chios Island
If your guests can time their travel dates to coincide with these events, they can witness the true spirit of the island:
1. Rocket War (Rouketopolemos) β During Easter
This is the island's most internationally famous event. In the town of Vrontados, two rival churches (Panagia Ereithiani and Agios Markos) launch thousands of handmade rockets at each other. The spectacle of light created in the night sky is a visual feast.
2. Mesta and Pyrgi Festivals β August 15
The day of the Assumption of Mary (Dekapentavgoustos) is celebrated throughout Greece, but the celebrations in Chiosβs medieval villages are unique. Long tables are set up in the squares, traditional music is played, and the "Sirtos" dances continue until morning, leaving your guests in awe of the local energy.
3. Mostra Carnival β February/March (Before Easter)
This carnival, held in the village of Thymiana, reenacts the islanders' historical struggle against pirates. It is a colorful event filled with costumes, masks, and the famous "Talimi" dance.
4. Agriculture and Tourism Festivals β July/August
During the summer months, small-scale festival-like events are frequently held, especially in the port area, where local producers showcase their natural products.
ποΈ Don't Leave Without Doing These: Chios Islandβs Most Unique Souvenirs
1. Mastic (Mastiha) Products
This is the only place in the world where real mastic is grown.
- Crystal Mastic: In its pure form, in small packets.
- Mastic Liqueur: The island's most elegant drink. It is famously enjoyed cold by the waterfront.
- Cosmetics: Everything from toothpaste to soap, creams to shampoos, all infused with mastic essence.
2. "Ksista" Motif Items
The famous geometric patterns found on the facades of houses in the Pyrgi village have been transformed into souvenirs.
- Ceramic plates, mugs, or handmade magnets adorned with these motifs make wonderful keepsakes.
3. Citrus Jams (Kampos Region)
Chiosβs Kampos region is famous for its citrus orchards. The "Mandarin Chios" (Chios Mandarin) is a certified product.
- Mandarin jam, orange sweets, and dried fruit candies must definitely find a spot in your bags.
4. Handmade Ceramics
The village of Armolia, included in your tour program, is the ceramic center of the island. The unique vases and figurines produced in the workshops here are highly valuable for home decoration.
5. Local Ouzo
Chios Island's own brands (such as Kazanisto or Apalarina) are smoother and more aromatic than their mainland counterparts.
Professional Tip: We can recommend that our guests visit the Mastiha Shop in the main square of the island. This is a prestigious spot where they can find the finest quality mastic products all under one roof.
